Japanese izakayas and small street-side restaurants are such an iconic part of the eating experience - glowing lanterns, plastic curtains, stacked beer crates and the promise of food and conversation inside.
I came across this one on a rainy evening, completely vacant at the time. I was drawn to the contrast between what I imagined the scene would normally feel like - busy, warm and full of people - and how quiet it was in that moment.
The rain falling against the clear curtains, the glow of the lanterns and the empty tables created a kind of stillness that felt beautiful. Rather than photographing the restaurant as it would usually be experienced, I was drawn to this brief moment before the people arrived - the atmosphere, the anticipation and the beauty of it simply sitting there in the rain.
All works are sold unframed and will be carefully packaged for delivery.
